Route 66 Adventures

The Painted Desert and Petrified Forest are magnificent!
Neither Mr. E. nor I had ever been, even though we’ve both lived in Arizona for over 35 years.

We visited Indian ruins,

and saw a wonderful array of petroglyphs,

hoo doos,

magical sediment hills,

and huge slabs of petrified wood, now scattered around the desert for miles upon miles upon miles.

It’s so hard to get my head around the fact that this place was once a giant tropical forest,  situated where present day Panama is now.  And that all those trees were covered with layers and layers of silt…until eons passed and all the wood cells were ever-so-slowly replaced with silica, and stained with all the different minerals present in the soil.

It’s quite a lot to think about, on this, our latest adventure along the Mother Road.
