Larger than Life Virgin

I came upon this 8 foot tall papier mache Virgin in San Miguel de Allende when I went with Rebecca’s group for Dia de lod Muertos in 2010.

She was so grand and glorious…who wouldn’t be reverent, as she towered over us?
Yet she was whimsical at the same time…something I’ve experienced – and am in awe of -so often in Mexico.

A few days later I ran into her again somewhere else – this time she was hanging out with a couple of friends!

Visit Rebecca @ for more offerings of this sort for the next 12 days, leading up to Mary’s Feast Day on Decemebr 12th.

  1. You are so right…..beautiful, yet with a certain sense of humor. Everything should be like that, right?

  2. how perfect dawn! truly she is so amazing!!! i loved that she “appeared” here and there for many of the celebrations of dia de los muertos. how fitting your parting shot would place her in the company of friends! how blessed are we to be returning in the spring for another chance meeting with the divine!

  3. She is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

  5. a beautiful work of art for sure. Thanks for sharing.

  6. she is certainly impressive but have you noticed she appears either to have indigestion or she smells something strange – at least thats what her expression suggests to me! I’d love to see her in real life!!

  7. Wonderful! Wonderful! ~ Photos are excellent ~ thanks, namaste, Carol (A Creative Harbor)

  8. I have never seen anything quite like this before and I am enchanted. I love the whimsy and it certainly made me smile.

  9. That Mary! You just never know where she’ll turn up.

  10. I love this! Whimsical indeed. I want so bad to get to San Miguel. I hope I can make thew trip if it happens next time. In the natiove American community, humor plays a big part as it is, like everything else, a part of life. These spirits depicted any which way can evoke humor to sorrow and everything in between. Wonderful post. Ollok forward to what lies ahead with this series.

  11. She is great! It’s good to know that the Mexican people can have such humor about Mary and her appearances. I have always thought that they probably treated her as something sacred and untoucheable but apparently I was wrong. Great photos!

  12. Wow! 8 feet tall, huh? How astounding! I love that she appeared a few days later with ‘friends’!

  13. Mary gets around, doesn’t she?
