Workin’ in the Rain

•August 23, 2013 • 9 Comments

Summer rains delight
Cool moisture feeds my soul, yet
Interrupts my work!

Don’t get me wrong here…I totally love the summer rains,
but I find it really hard to work on my art, since much of what I do is outside.

Every day, I go out and dump the water…from just about everything…and hope that it will all dry out enough to start again.

Everything’s wet,
glue won’t glue,
paint won’t dry,
wax isn’t warm enough…
maybe I should just get a clue and occupy myself in a different manner for awhile, yes?

Get Back to Work!

•August 20, 2013 • 2 Comments

My show in Santa Fe was better than ever this year.

On the way home, I consigned several more pieces of work to the Home on the Range Gift Shop at the famous Range Cafe in Bernalillo…

and I made a date with La Posada in September to take a new load.

Needless to say, after this trip I’m fairly low on stock,
and with a week of family wedding festivities immediately following, plus another week to rest up,
it’s time to get back to work!

My studio is a mess…
yet I continue to buy new/old pieces of “junk” to incorporate into new pieces.

So the cycle continues…
and a very sweet cycle it is!

Sunflowers Ruleth

Gardens  in their prime
 Sunflow’rs thrive among the fray
Thus they reign supreme
…for now

But a couple of year ago, it was the hollyhocks that totally kicked butt in the same exact spot!

Monsoon Garden

•August 13, 2013 • 1 Comment

Our garden limped along in June,
seriously aching to grow,
yet devoid of the rainfall nutrients that would make it thrive.

When the monsoons came – 26 days in a row!!! –  the garden absolutely flourished…and quickly!

Now we’re enjoying the late summer bounty…
delayed gratification at its best!

Wedding Paradise

This weekend my step-son got married!

We had the shower at our house on Thursday,

 The rehearsal dinner on Friday,

and the big event at Watson lake on Saturday,

bringing a new paradise to our family!

Such a cute little couple, no?

Santa Fe Dreams…

•August 9, 2013 • 2 Comments

Santa Fe was a huge success and  a ton of fun!

Here are some of my favorite things about this annual trip:

Road trips with Leia

The Turquoise Room at La Posada

Where else but Santa Fe…and the Vatican?

People watching!

Sidewalk chalk on the square

and shopping (in general and) at the Tesuque Flea Market!

Santa Fe Calling!

•July 30, 2013 • Leave a Comment

This is the third year in a row that I will be selling my artwork at the Girls, Inc. Show in Santa Fe.

My friend, Leia, makes this this road trip possible, because she has the booth, the displays, the “in.”
She also has room on the wall of her booth, which I fill up wit my rustic folk art…
a perfect combination!

Leia makes and sells the most gorgeous beaded necklaces, using turquoise, spiny oyster, silver, and other quality stones.

She also custom fits what I call gaucho hats…the palm leaf hats with the super wide brims, and sells handmade hatbands and hurricane straps to outfit them just right.

After meeting up in Flagstaff, we always stop at La Posada in Winslow going both directions.
It’s a sin to pass by and not stop at the Turquoise Room for sustenance…
plus, I’ll sell art pieces at the gift shop on the way back through.

We stop in Gallup, then end our day’s journey in Bernalillo…
home of the Range Cafe and the Home on the Range Gift shop, where I have some more of my artwork.

The next day, after devouring huevos rancheros at the Range, we head up to Santa Fe, take a quick run to the Teseque  swap meet, set up downtown, checkout a favorite shop, and have a delicious dinner, and rest up to
work on Saturday and Sunday.

On Monday we have a free day to visit Leia’s friend, Heidi, at her gallery on Canyon Road, to wander, shop, and eat more delicious food, before returning home on Tuesday!

See you next week everyone!

Sign Crazy Haiku

Signs of yesteryear
Printed beacons whisp’ring tales
Blessing now our home

Mr. E and I love vintage signs!
We started with one wall,

then I began collecting signs from Mexico for my studio,

then we moved into the way-back yard,

and now we just put a 1940’s Royal Crown Cola sign on the original ’26 garage.

The Pile Grows

•July 24, 2013 • 1 Comment

Every time I get ready to do a show, I start to pile up all the pieces on my living room floor.

I need to see them all… from small to big…so I can access what I have and price them accordingly.

I agonize over the pricing part:
I want them to be affordable for people, yet I need to get a fair price for the time, work, materials, show and travel costs, and any “creative genius” that they might have.

Right now I have 39 pieces finished.
I have one week to go…
and I’m shooting for 60+!
Since I’m getting ready for my stepson’s wedding immediately after I get back from Santa Fe,
and I work one of the days prior…
it’s definitely time for some prayers!
