Sugar Skull Boots

•March 1, 2014 • 5 Comments

I adore Mexico.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

My favorite holiday is Dia de los Muertos
or Day of the Dead,
where sugar skulls are the predominant icon.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’ve traveled to Oaxaca for Dia de Los Muertos several times
and gone to the cemetery with the Porras family into the wee hours of the morning.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’ve celebrated Day of the Dead in San Miguel de Allende.

I’ve participated in Tucson, Arizona’s annual Dia de los Muertos procession through downtown.

I have a permanent altar in my house,

IMG_7433

as well as a shelf of wee characters in my living room,

IMG_7435
and TONS of  sweet little calaveras scattered throughout the house.

Occasionally, I even dabble with skulls in my own artwork.

So
you can understand that when I saw these Old Gringo boots,
I absolutely fell in love

IMG_7469

and I just had to have them!!!

IMG_7470

Now, I do love bright and bold colors,
but I’m not generally a neon kinda gal,
and I had a bit of a struggle with it initially.
But I’ve come to understand that,
if you’re gonna make a {sugar skull} statement,
why not go all-out?

IMG_8001

I’ll be happy to style them in about 4+ weeks
when I can wear real footwear again!

IMG_8000

You are witnessing the ultimate shame and humility
for a {footwear} fashionista
right before your eyes!!!

At least the Virgin will be watching over me for a spell…

I just returned from a magical week in Puerto Vallarta
surrounded by 11 unbelievably awesome women
in a tropical paradise,
eating the BEST food on the planet,
and making stupendous art
under the dynamic expert direction of master artist and teacher Susan Wechsler.

I kid you not,
Hacienda Mosaico
was a veritable tropical paradise…
and our beautiful and talented hostess, Sam, was delightful beyond words!

We had breakfast every morning at 9:00

IMG_7803

then worked until lunch at 2:00

IMG_7805

and maybe worked some more,
or hung out by the pool,
or went for a walk,
or chatted with new friends,
or took a nap,
or went to the beach,
or had a libation…

IMG_7452

but back to the dresses!
Remember my plain white dress form?
Here’s how it played out…

but all in all,
I’m delighted with every aspect of this

Packing for Mexico!

•February 14, 2014 • 4 Comments

After a year of great anticipation,
the mosaic workshop in Puerto Vallarta is finally upon us.
The temperatures are nearly 90*
so it’s virtually summer south of the border…
and that obviously means exotic margaritas,
among other things.

IMG_0650

Now, the big question always is…what to pack?
My journey into insanity so begins.

IMG_7711

I decided on four skirts…

IMG_7713

but then,
what about these beauties?

IMG_7707

Sasabee and I picked out some favorite tops…

IMG_7720

but hey…
these work well, too!

IMG_7709

Of course, there are the tunics in the mix…
but am I taking enough of my infamous staples?

IMG_7717

And every full-blooded woman needs a couple of pairs of basic jeans, yes?

IMG_7719

But these are way more edgy and fun, no?

IMG_7739

Then, there’s the practical footwear…

IMG_7736

yet, I really want to wear zippy, not-necessarily-impractical sandals!
(How’s about those cool new insoles, huh?  Shazam!)

IMG_7652

AND then there are wraps…

IMG_7741

AND
the undies,
tanks,
bras,
slips,
leggings,
swimsuit,
cover-up,
rash guard,
socks,
lounge wear,
and pj’s…

IMG_7722

AND work clothes,
like my gifted Virgin of Guadalupe apron…
and so it goes in my world.

IMG_7704

IMG_7639

IMG_7556

Luckily,
after several hours and the help of a girlfriend,
I have a few summery outfits figured out.

IMG_7259IMG_7261

Oh,  $#)(&%@?!!!
Did I mention that I have to take the dress aperture and all my mosaic supplies?
And seriously, there are
way…more…heavy…glass…tiles…
to go!

DSC09630

My verdict is that
PACKING*IS*A*NIGHTMARE,
but going to Mexico/the ocean/a mosaic workshop/on vacation
with my dear Sallie is a profound and joyous blessing!

Viva Margaritas!

…must get back to packing…

Mosaic Dresses

•February 9, 2014 • 9 Comments

On Saturday, My Buddy Sal and I will be heading to Puerto Vallarta
to take a week-long mosaics workshop from master artist and teacher Susan Wechsler.

mosaico_home01-900[1]

We will be staying at Hacienda Mosaico, run by Sam(antha) Leonard,
who moved down there from the states years ago,
and bought a small hotel where various art workshops are offered throughout the year.

Susan initially gave us a choice of different “nichos” to mosaic,
but later offered the option of making a mosaic dress,
which I was all over!
Check out Susan’s incredible website @ http://www.mosaicsbysusan.com/.

IMG_7452

Here’s the naked dress form…

IMG_7261

IMG_7486

and most of the materials I’ve gathered so far.
Upon my return, I’ll be sure to share the finished product.

So,
I adore traveling to Mexico,
but I absolutely abhor packing…
especially, in this case, for a whole different season.
The average daily temperature for Puerto Vallarta in February is 80*!

IMG_7510

IMG_7513

IMG_7501

IMG_7508

I bought a new Hard Tail skirt and Free People embroidered top for the occasion,
and paired them with my AG denim jacket.
I’m loving that mermaid thing goin’ on!

IMG_7495

Then, I foraged in my studio
and grabbed a few of my favorite warm-weather-pieces for consideration, as well.
Looks like there will be another post (or 2 or 3 or 4 or 5) on this topic
coming  prior to departure!
I might need some help deciding what to take…
perhaps una margarita gigante will get my juices flowing appropriately…

Layers Indeed

•February 5, 2014 • 3 Comments

The numerous Arctic blasts that hit the East and Midwest have been brutal this year…
and here we were in the central Arizona mountains,
sitting so pretty for a month with 50 and 60 degree temperatures…
until last week when we got rain and wind and sogginess….
which we fully deserve,
I might add.

Alter Ego Mexicana Art Studio

Alter Ego Mexicana Art Studio

The good news was that
it was finally time to layer it up,
so that I did!

IMG_7344

Starting with my skinny BDG jeans,
I donned a gray T-Party cowlneck tunic
and a sweet floral top by Scrapbook.

IMG_7360

The top’s details…
a shark bite hem,
lace cut-outs down the sides,
and the dainty wrapped back give it some unique character.
(I especially like the rear view in this…a very rare phenomenon!)

IMG_7333

Add a statement sweater,
such as this Free People floral number,

IMG_7332

matching (not a dirty word in my book) El Naturalista boots,

IMG_7331
and a scarf,
and you’re ready to brave the elements!

Combine
***Different lengths***
***Some kind of color scheme***
 ***a standout piece***
and hit it!

Has it been cold enough to layer it up where you live???
I’m certainly appreciating that we’re getting the best of both worlds here in Prescott.
Stay warm and have a great week!

Personal Style: I Don’t Care!

•January 30, 2014 • 8 Comments

I’ve never blindly followed fashion trends or “rules.”

Oh sure…
100 years ago, when I was a elementary teacher, I couldn’t go too crazy,
but even then my taste was offbeat…
at least for this conservative little town.

Any more,
I don’t care

if I ruffle a few feathers with my
casual-bohemian/hint-of-flower-child style.

IMG_6481

Honestly,
I don’t care
that I’m short
and I adore wearing long tunics.

IMG_4620

I don’t care
that I’m over 50 and I wear slips on the outside…

IMG_7183

and
I don’t care
if maxi-sweaters aren’t the norm for my age group.

IMG_1535

IMG_5400

I don’t care
if people think it’s weird to wear dresses over jeans,

IMG_2110IMG_2678IMG_4752

and furthermore…
I don’t care
if people don’t appreciate my funky footwear.

It’s all about finding styles that you feel comfortable in, and just going for it!

IMG_6289

The best advice I’ve ever heard about personal style is this:

Whatever you end up wearing,
be sure to “own it” and proceed with confidence…
and just a teensy hint of attitude!

Friends and Fashion

•January 26, 2014 • 9 Comments

DSC09630

My oldest and very dear friend, Sallie, is an artist living in Cottonwood, Arizona.

IMG_7209

She just started sharing studio space with a friend in the Old Jerome High School,
which has become quite an artists’ enclave over the past few years.

IMG_7218

Her studio is bright and open, with high ceilings and wonderful old slate chalkboards.
(That’s the teacher in me reminiscing!)
She can finally spread out, display her work, and hang out with other wild and crazy artists.
Check out Sallie’s website @ http://salliecross.com/.

IMG_7245

On my recent visit,
Sallie took me out to dinner at a new palace called Bocci,
which was totally hip and incredibly scrumptious.
Then we walked over to see our friends playing music at a nearby wine bar
and enjoyed some most delicious wine.

On Sunday we drove to Sedona to hit Goodwill and a favorite store called Crystal Magic Clothing.

IMG_7322

There, I found this darling Krista Lee black top with floral embroidery
and a little peplum-esque high-low hem.

IMG_7288
I’m not exactly sure why, but it has a slight cowgirl feel to it,
so I paired it up with my Old Gringo boots and tried a few skirts on with it.

IMG_7269

A Weston Wear balck ruched pencil skirt…
for that slimming line,

IMG_7296

my Urban Outfitters skater skirt for a spunky look,

IMG_7308

A distressed Levi’s Brand embellished mini, as a surprise element,

IMG_7313

and finally, my Sahalie burgundy denim mini.

IMG_7324

I keep forgetting to wear my shorter skirts
but this top reminded me of how cute/sexy/fun
they can be with simple leggings and booties.

Today’s moral:
Don’t forget (or be afraid) to show a little leg!

Birthday Skirt

•January 17, 2014 • 2 Comments

I’m continually falling deeper and deeper into the bohemian mode…
but this time,
IT’S NOT MY FAULT!!!

While I was out of town visiting my family recently,
Mr. E went to Hop Sing Trading Company
(my fav-o-rite boho store in the whole-wide-world)
in search of a birthday gift.

IMG_7146

Well, wouldn’t you know it?
They remembered something that I had tried on but didn’t buy…
not because I didn’t like it, mind you,
but because I can’t buy everything that I find beautiful in that place!

IMG_7206

This exceptional Free People skirt is a gorgeous coral color,
heavily embroidered,
has sweet little mirrors sewn in,
and is quintessentially bohemian.

IMG_7100

It’s a no-brainer to wear it with a black top…

IMG_7134

and really fun worn with an unexpected color and pattern, as well.

BUT…

IMG_7185

DARE I mix patterns in such a big way?

IMG_7182

Mr. E gave me the sweater for my birthday last year,
and you know what?

IMG_7183

That man really knows how to score!

Yes, I wore my new black dress,
but, as the photographer, guess what?
I have tons of pictures of other guests, but only one with (part of ) the black dress.
